worldSALON in Toronto was founded by Brian Phillips, a hairdresser on a mission to make the world a little better, one strand of hair at a time. After developing contact dermatitis in 1993, Phillips decided to stop doing perms. This prompted him to look at other aspects of his business and what they were doing to the environment.
Now, solar panels heat the salon’s water and worldSalon offers worldPRODUCTS for sale that are eco-friendly and effective. Halogen bulbs have been replaced by CFL bulbs, and computers are plugged into special power bars that cut the power when switched off at night. In 2007, Phillips received a certificate from the Ontario Power Generation confirming that he’d cut the energy use of the salon by half in a seven year time frame.
