Arsenic in Your Apple Juice Controversy With Dr. Oz – Does Organic Help?

Dr. Oz recently stuck his neck out in a way that you usually don’t expect mainstream television stars to do in declaring that arsenic levels in apple juice may have long-term implications for children who drink it. The FDA has defended the industry (in true form) by stating that Dr. Oz was talking about the wrong kind of arsenic. Dr. Oz states in this video that in studies that he took into account, levels of both inorganic and organic arsenic were above acceptable levels in apple juice.
He also defends apple juice and states that he doesn’t want to alarm people about what they are giving to their kids. He merely wanted to express a concern about the generational effects of higher arsenic levels in apple juice. Of course the first question on most of our minds is whether or not arsenic levels would be lower in an organic apple. You would think that it would be, based on the fact that there are no pesticides or fertilizers being added. Luckily, this was part of Dr. Oz’s study, and all of the organic apple juice they tested came back with way lower than normal levels of arsenic.
If you are in Canada, you can purchase Kiju organic juices fairly cheaply at Wal-Mart and my local grocery store. If you are in the US, I’m sure it is equally easy to find, if a little bit more expensive than conventional apple juice.
