Thanksgiving Day is right around the corner, and the overindulgence of it can be a killer to the healthy routine you’ve had going. We’ve put together some tips to help you stay on a healthy track while still enjoying everything Thanksgiving has to offer.
Here are Essentia’s 5 Tips for a healthy Thanksgiving:
GET ENOUGH SLEEP
Yes, this is super important! Getting enough sleep the night before Thanksgiving can be a huge asset to ensuring your stay on track during Thanksgiving dinner. When your body is short on sleep you tend to be hungrier, leading to more snacking and even overloading your plate. If you’re having trouble catching those ZZZ’s you’ll want to check out our tips to getting to sleep and most importantly trade up to an Essentia mattress. Essentia has been named the World’s Healthiest Mattress and is the only mattress able to address the 6 key elements of Wholebody recovery. All this translated to next level sleep!
Eat breakfast! The temptation may be high to skip breakfast to be sure you can fit as much turkey in there are you can, but this is actually hurt you in the long run. Eating a nutritious breakfast will help keep you on track during the main event. You’ll also want to keep it simple, so why not whip up some easy-peasy overnight oats before hitting the sack the night before. One of our favorite and delicious recipe is the Peanut Butter Overnight Oats by Minimalist Baker. Trust us on this one, you can’t go wrong!
SIDE DISH HEAVEN
Turkey isn’t the biggest culprit of the overindulging during thanksgiving dinner, it’s normally the side dished! If your family is up to it there are some awesome and super tasty side dish swaps that they won’t even realize are healthy. For example, ditch the traditional green bean casserole that is laden with hidden fats, carbs, and sodium and upgrade to this awesome Roasted Green Bean, Mushroom & Onions with Parmesan Breadcrumbs alternative. Some other great alternatives are Cauliflower “Mashed Potatoes” and even this Sweet Potato & Cauliflower Mash. By building a healthier plate with turkey and great veggie heavy side dishes will definitely make you the Thanksgiving dinner winner.
THE ALCOHOL FACTOR
Drink up, it’s the holidays! It can be easy to overindulge on the alcohol which can hurt more than the food. There’s no reason to skip out on the fun, but just be mindful of what you’re drinking. I like to stick to a classic vodka and soda water to keep my calorie intake down. However, having a signature Thanksgiving cocktail is always a part of our celebrations. This year we’re going to try out this awesome Champagne Punch by Greatist but upgrading some ingredients to add a healthier kick like using Honest Organic Golden Ginger Ale.
Yes, there are Thanksgiving marathons and fun outdoor events to take part in, but if you don’t make it out on Thanksgiving Day don’t feel bad. You can make up for it and save some money by hitting the mall for an epic day of Black Friday shopping! There are going to be some great deals out there and we may have a few big ones up our sleeve as well. Just be sure to have a good breakfast before you leave to keep you fueled for fun. Then when you get home, you can take part in my personal favorite Thanksgiving tradition… leftovers!
Most importantly, don’t deny yourself dessert! We hope these tips help you stay on track for a healthy, happy Thanksgiving with your loved ones. Have anything to add? Let us know in the comments!
